MLS website confirms Voyageurs’ Cup match-ups By Steven Sandor Posted on January 9, 2012 Comments Off on MLS website confirms Voyageurs’ Cup match-ups 0 679 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Voyageurs Cup Book it. The semifinals of the Voyageurs’ Cup will see the Vancouver Whitecaps face FC Edmonton and Toronto FC play the Montreal Impact. The match-ups were confirmed by MLSSoccer.com on Monday, quoting Canadian Soccer Association officials. See that REPORT here. This would confirm the draw that The 11 has been reporting for the last month. (SEE LINKS BELOW) The draw means that TFC and the Impact will face each other five times this season. FC Edmonton’s home match against the Whitecaps would go at Commonwealth Stadium, as the artificial turf there is FIFA approved and the Canadian football lines can be removed. Under tournament regulations, a match cannot be played on a surface that also has football, rugby or lacrosse lines. It has to be a true soccer pitch. There had been some confusion whether or not Montreal would be seeded No. 3 ahead of FC Edmonton, even though FC Edmonton finished ahead of the Impact in the NASL standings. That’s because Montreal moves up to a higher league this season. But, according to our interpretation of the rulebook, the automatic higher seeds for MLS teams only kick in when the tournament grows to more than four teams, which will happen when Ottawa joins NASL. This is to protect MLS teams from having to go through preliminary play-in games, which aren’t needed right now. The tournament, which had been known as the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, is expected to have a new title sponsor in 2012.
