On Friday, the lottery phases ended — and tickets for the upcoming Women’s World Cup went on general sale.

And the numbers are encouraging. According to FIFA, 515,000 tickets were sold through the first four phases of the ticket-selling process, before the tickets went up for general sale.

“All Germany’s group games, the quarter-final in Wolfsburg, the match for third place and the final are practically sold out, said local organizing committee president Steffi Jones through FIFA.

This is encouraging news for the Canadian Soccer Association. Canada won the right to host the 2015 Women’s World Cup by acclimation. The fact that there was no one else left standing at the end of the bidding process was troubling, even though the CSA felt that other suitors abandoned their bids when they saw how technically strong the Canadian bid was going to be.

And the German sales numbers, if accurate, are a sign to Canada that most of the seats can be filled in 2015, as well.

The tickets aren’t cheapies, either. While children can get in for as little as 15 Euros, tickets for the final are going for as much as 200 Euros each.

As of Friday, there were approximately 285,000 tickets left for sale. And it is ridiculous to expect each and every game to sell out. Heck, there were plenty of empty seats at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. If Germany can sell out its home games and the semifinals and final, the tournament has to be considered a marketing success.
