Charlie Davies
Charlie Davies cruised to MLS Player of the Week honours. The D.C. United striker captured the vote from the membership of the North American Soccer Reporters, the league announced Monday. Davies scored three times in a 3-0 win over Chivas USA on Saturday. It’s worth noting that Chris Pontius set up all three goals, before being lost to what’s believed to be a season-threatening injury. And, for Canadian soccer fans, the hook is that Canadian national teamer Dwayne De Rosario was credited with second assists on two of Davies’ markers. De Rosario earned the “selfish” tag from a large contingent of Toronto FC fans during his final year in red — as the revisionist historians took over at TFC, downplaying his achievements with the club when they realized the divorce between player and team was inevitable. He’s proven that not to be true, as he is now tied for third overall on the MLS assist list, with 10 this year. Davies captured 12 of the 18 first-place votes, while Pontius got four. How The 11 voted: Had to go with Davies, as D.C. United surged past the New York Red Bulls in the standings and got into a playoff spot. But the second-place vote with every Canadian MLS fan’s Public Enemy No. 1, Teal Bunbury. Even though he has had to fight for a spot in the Sporting Kansas City lineup, he impressed with a solid two-goal effort in a 3-0 win over Houston. More importantly, it was sweet revenge for Bunbury, who burned Canadian national-team defender Andrew Hainault repeatedly through the course of the game. Hainault collided with Bunbury in preseason, resulting in a dislocated elbow Canadian-born forward; it turned into a case of schadenfreude for many Canadian fans who were still resentful of Bunbury’s decision to play for the U.S. ahead of his birth country. But, as Bunbury has shown with a two-goal performance in Vancouver and a dominating performance against Hainault, the kid does have some stones.
