Gagandeep Dosanjh… 5 goals in 2 weekend matches
So, who is No. 1? York or UBC? That will be the question followers of CIS men’s soccer will be asking as this long weekend came to a close. York came into the weekend at No. 1, while UBC came in at No. 2. Both schools were undefeated. And both schools stayed that way — but did UBC’s two routs over UNBC do enough to sway voters away from York, which stayed the course with a 1-0 win over Guelph? York got a 79th-minute goal from Tyrone Downs to defeat a Guelph side which was without reigning CIS Player of the Year Robbie Murphy. Sotiri Varlokostas got his seventh clean sheet in 11 games. York should get another win this Wednesday, when it faces UOIT. But UBC played twice this past weekend — and outscored UNBC by a cumulative 11-1 count over the two matches. And Gagandeep Dosanjh scored three times in the 6-0 win Friday and another two in Saturday’s 5-1 win. With 11 goals on the season, Dosanjh, who has played with the Whitecaps U-23 program, is enjoying a banner third season after a scoring drought put a damper on him during his second year of eligibility with UBC. While Guelph represents a tougher mark than UNBC, the fact that UBC scored 11 times in two matches over the weekend, while York scored just one in one, might tilt the scales to the T-Birds. The T-Birds have a massive challenge next Saturday, when they travel to Edmonton’s Foote Field to take on Canada West powerhouse, Alberta. The Golden Bears swill feature keeper Jay Vetsch and star striker Marcus Johnstone, who also appeared with Scottish at the Canadian men’s nationals in Winnipeg. Vetsch actually commuted between Winnipeg and his CIS matches this past weekend. OTTAWA SWEEPS: Meanwhile, the University of Ottawa looks good to remain atop the women’s rankings. The Gee Gees swept their weekend slate of action, beating Laurentian 3-0 Saturday and then defeating Nipissing by a 2-0 count on Sunday. Local product Pilar Khoury was the star of the weekend for Ottawa, as she bagged both goals in the win over Nipissing.
