Mario Kovacevic
A couple of names familiar to fans of Toronto FC and FC Edmonton made waves in CIS preseason action over the weekend. Mario Kovacevic, who had a trial with FC Edmonton in mid-March, playing in a friendly against the Vancouver Metro Soccer League All-Stars, was the star of this past weekend’s Old Four tourney. The U of T took the men’s side of the tournament — which also features McGill, Western and Queen’s — after two straight wins via penalty shootout. Kovacevic scored the opener as the U of T beat McGill in the semifinal after the match finished in a 1-1 draw. The winning penalty came off the foot of Kilian Elkinson, who spent some of the 2008 season on Toronto FC’s MLS roster, though he never appeared in a league match. Kovacevic would also get the U of T’s lone goal in the final against Western in a 1-1 regulation draw; but the Varsity Blues were perfect on penalties, winning the shootout by a 5-4 count. WOMEN Meanwhile, the McGill Martlets won the women’s section of the Old Four, as Julia Bahen struck the winning penalty in the championship game after teammate Laura Bland-Lasso was hauled down in the penalty area. The Montreal school beat Western 2-1 in the final, as both schools prepare for their CIS openers next week. UPCOMING Canada West doesn’t get its soccer schedule underway until the weekend of September 7, but two of the new men’s programs will be getting baptisms of fire. Mount Royal and UNBC are two of the three new soccer programs in Canada West this season (Winnipeg being the other) and the schedulemaker has not been kind to them. UNBC begins its soccer life in CIS with a Sept. 7-8 doubleheader at the national champion University of Victoria, while Mount Royal will face the University of Alberta, a national semifinalist from last season, in a home-and-home series The two traditional soccer powers will get a chance to feast on the newbies in week one of the season — and we’ll have to see what that does to the national rankings when they come out Sept. 10. Check The11.ca every Monday for our CIS wrap. We believe very strongly that top Canadian university players deserve the chances to be drafted, signed and/or invited to combines after their Canadian collegiate careers. We encourage soccer fans from across the country to support their local clubs. We can’t expose Canadian talent to the masses until we try to give Canadian university soccer the coverage like the NCAA enjoys south of the border.Jul
