Just 10 minutes into the second half of its second match at the Yongchuan Cup, the Canadian national women’s team itself down by three goals to the world-16th ranked South Koreans. A consolation headed goal by Nichelle Prince cut the deficit to 3-1, but that’s how the game ended — and the youthful side that coach John Herdman selected for this Chinese tournament saw its record fall to a win and a loss.

Goals from Hyundai Steel teammates Jeon Ga-Eul and Jung Seol-Bin bookended a marker from Ji So-Yun, who plays her pro soccer in Japan, with Kobe. In 2010, Jeon Ga-Eul was named MVP of the Korean national women’s league.

Herdman’s side won its opener 1-0 over the Chinese, but struggled for large portions of that match and, truly, deserved to be down a goal or two by the end of the first half of that match. But, thanks to Chinese side that was wasteful with its opportunities, and some find goalkeeping from Erin McLeod, Canada was able to hold the score to 0-0 until former U-20 star Adriana Leon broke the deadlock with a great individual effort.

Herdman left a lot of the veterans from the bronze-medal winning Olympic team home for this tourney, choosing to bring a group of U-17 and U-20 prospects, as he’s already looking to give these players their baptisms of fire as the squad sets its sights on the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

Canada wraps up the tourney with a match against Norway. The Norwegians, coached by former Canadian national women’s team gaffer Even Pellerud, just need a draw to clinch the tournament.

Canada can still win the tourney if it beats Norway and then gets some help from the winless Chinese, who face South Korea in their final match.
