The Canadian striker scored the opening and winning goal in the 78th minute Saturday, tapping home a cross from teammate Felix Klaus, as SpVgg Greuther Furth defeated MSV Duisburg 2-0. For Occean, it was his 12th goal of the Bundesliga 2. season and, until the title chasers play later in the weekend, gave his club a four-point advantage at the top of the table. On Friday, the Canadian Soccer Association announced that Occean had been named its player of the month for February. Occean scored a key goal against TSV Hoffenhei that helped overturn the Bundesliga side in the German Cup, as well as being a key part of Furth’s rise to to the top of the second division. Occean started for his club side Saturday, even though he was unavailable to play for the Canadian national team in midweek. Without Occean, Canada lost 3-1 to Armenia in Cyprus, a game which saw Canada struggle to get any production from its players at the top of the formation. National coach Stephen Hart said Occean had a “damaged foot” which limited his training time with his club team, and that Occean didn’t practice for days after his previous German league match. But Occean, despite the injury, was healthy enough to continue his torrid play for his club.
