Camilo earns Whitecaps their second POTW award in a row

Camilo’s two-goal, one-assist performance last Wednesday impressed enough of the voters on the North American Soccer Reporters POTW panel to give him the lion’s share of the first-place votes. Even though the Whitecaps didn’t play on the weekend, no MLS player could come up with as headturning a performance as Camilo did on Wednesday. Chivas USA took an early lead, but the Whitecaps stormed back with two goals in first-half stoppage time. Camilo nudged the ball over to Jordan Harvey for the equalizer, and then got the go-ahead goal as he tucked a shot inside the post after making a nice cut to beat a defender. The Brazilian added the icing on the cake with an insurance goal that took a deflection off a defender in the 81st minute. Since the shot was goal-bound, Camilo retained credit for the goal. With the two goals this week, the Brazilian now has eight on the season, just two off the league lead. He’s scoring again like it was 2012 — but, maybe most importantly, when you watch him play, he’s staying on his feet a lot more. Ever since his controversial fall in the penalty area earned the Whitecaps a penalty in the first leg of their Amway Canadian Championship semifinal against FC Edmonton, Camilo has not been the player-you-love-to-hate; he’s showing us all just how quick and strong a player he can be.
