Boa Morte at TFC: Desperate times don’t always call for desperate measures By Steven Sandor Posted on May 22, 2012 1 0 758 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter in his West Ham days Luis Boa Morte, a desperate player. Toronto FC, a desperate club. What a marriage it could be. Boa Morte trained with the Reds today. And, for those desperate (that word gets used a lot in this column) TFC fans clinging on to visions of the Portuguese forward playing for the likes of Arsenal, West Ham and Fulham, here is a reality check. For those who lost track of Boa Morte’s career — and, until Boa Morte appeared in Toronto today, there was no reason for any Canadian fan to be tracking the striker’s career, anyway — here’s the lowdown. His last club was the Orlando Pirates. He was a splash signing for the South African side, and then left the team after playing just two games. According to the African soccer magazine, Kickoff (CLICK HERE), Boa Morte left the club soon after he joined, claiming he didn’t feel players were treated well by management. So, faster than you can say “Lauren Robert” another former EPL player who is years past that level of play shows up at Reds’ camp. No matter if Boa Morte left Orlando Pirates because of some moral conviction or because he didn’t fit in, this is for sure: The South African league offers nowhere near the level of play as MLS does. So, you’d be asking a 34-year-old man to make a major step back up the ladder in order for him to play in North America. Sure, Boa Morte used to wear an Arsenal shirt. But don’t expect the next coming of Thierry Henry in MLS. And, another question: Should a team that is 0-9-0 even be looking at thirtysomethings, or focusing on rebuilding with youth? Why bring in a Band-Aid solution to fix a heart wound?
