On Thursday, the Canadian Soccer Association released a list of 24 players who will represent Canada at this October’s U-17 World Cup. Of the 24, 21 are on the proper roster, while three are alternates. While FIFA has been notified which three players are alternates, who can only play in order to replace an injured member of the main roster, Fleming wouldn’t reveal which three were on the outside of the bubble.

The two new additions were already announced, but they aren’t officially considered Canadian roster players. On Monday, Queens Park Rangers confirmed that Dylan Carreiro and Michael Petrasson, who are with QPR’s developmental program, have been named to the squad. The Canadian Soccer Association confirmed that the Petrasso and Carreiro have been invited to camp, but their spots are outside the 21-man roster.

The most interesting subplot of a Canada-Australia match is the presence of Holger Osieck in the Aussies’ coaching box. Osieck led Canada to one of its most prestigious soccer titles, the capture of the Gold Cup trophy in 2000.

So, to apply after three years, you can not leave the country for a single day (save for a leap year) as three x 365 days = 1,095 days. Did any of these players go home for a single day? Go on road trips or training camps to the United States? Of course they did. So they’d need to wait till they hit 1,095 days in a four-year period.

“I was talking to my mom last week, and she told me that John might not be coming back,” said national-team keeper Erin McLeod, who was in Calgary Thursday for the launch of the elite women’s team. “I almost had a heart attack. He’s been so phenomenal for this group. For me, especially, I can’t imagine playing for anyone else.”

FIFA’s calendar has indicated that Canada will face Australia on Oct. 16 in London, England.

The first two games the men’s national team will play under the watch of new head coach Benito Floro will see Mauritania, currently ranked No. 151 in the world, providing the opposition.
