Right now, Canada is one win, one draw at the Algarve Cup because, really, their goal hasn't been threatened. That's not going to happen at the World Cup. At some point, the opposition will score. At some point, Canada might need to score two to win, or to find the net on that one great chance that comes to them in order to turn a 0-o draw into a 1-0 triumph.

Let’s face it, you would stay off the message boards and Reddit and the soccer blogs if you wanted sober, measured analysis. What you want is reactionary, knee-jerk, panicked commentary.

But, with yet another loss to the Americans in which the Canadians didn’t generate enough to be competitive, it’s OK to be nervous about what Canada will do when it gets to the World Cup.

But, as Canada preps for the CONCACAF championships — this region’s qualifiers for the 2019 Women’s World Cup — maybe this scrappy 1-0 win was exactly the kind of game that was needed. The Brazilians hacked. They whacked.  The game had very little in terms of flow.

France’s win at home Monday night over the Canadian women’s national team will go as one of the most comprehensive 1-0 wins we’ve ever seen.

Canada finished the tournament with its third straight win after losing the opener to Sweden by  a 3-1 count.

On a day when Canada Soccer honoured five retiring veterans — Kaylyn Kyle, Lauren Sesselmann, Robyn Gayle, Josee Belanger and Jonelle Filigno — it was the kids who made themselves count.  Janine Beckie, age 22, had a hat trick, 16-year-old Jordyn Huitema had two and 18-year-old Deanne Rose opened the scoring.

Even though Lawrence converted her attempt from the spot, it was Buchanan and her Lyon teammates who celebrated after 120 minutes of scoreless soccer and then a shootout that was decided by a 7-6 count.

The fact that such impressive performances were turned in by youngsters — from fullback Ashley Lawrence to midfielder Jessie Fleming to Beckie to Rose — bodes well for a program that, just four years before, was starved for young talent.
