The grass vs. turf debate was a topic of debate once again on Wednesday, during a sponsored conference call with three members of the women’s national team — Rhian Wilkinson, Erin McLeod and Diana Matheson — and Women’s World Cup communications officer Sandra Gage.

With nearly 40 per cent of the team’s spots taken by Canadians, the W-League’s all-star selections certainly have a good-news feel to them.

On Wednesday, on the road in Paderborn against another elite national team, the Germans, the Canadians lost 1-0. But even though the scoreline was less severe, it was a more sobering reality check than the match against the U.S.

If any of the players, especially the attackers, excel at the camp, they may have decent shots at getting looks from the senior squad, as well.

“If anyone in Canada has players up front, there’s definitely some shirts available,” Herdman said.

“I expect some changes will be made, that’s par for the course,” said Herdman.

"The last 30 minutes of the game really caused us a few problems. The U.S. finally got Morgan released and that was the game plan — to keep Morgan and Wambach quiet," said Herdman.

“It was definitely a difficult decision as I was playing with the U.S. team – the youth teams – but after talking to my coaches, my family, at this time I feel like this is the right move to develop myself as a player and continue to improve,” said Quon. “John and the Canadian team, all the women are great players. They’re knowledgeable at soccer and that is what contributed to my decision.”

“We get reminded about it every time we bump into people in airports. People won’t leave it alone – it’s unreal,” said national coach John Herdman after a spirited practice in front of a few hundred fans on Thursday night.

The Canadian Soccer Association is now working with FIFA to ensure that Quon is eligible to play. Herdman said that a national coach needs to invite a player to camp before the FIFA process can begin.
