Quintessentially Canadian Power Rankings, MLS season-end/NASL 1 week to go 26 Oct 2015If Kyle Porter plays 22 minutes or more for Atlanta in the final week of the NASL season, he is guaranteed to be the Canadian minutes leader in MLS or NASL this season. This is the penultimate instalment of the Power Rankings, with the MLS regular season having wrapped up this past weekend and NASL having just one week to go (save for FC Edmonton, which has a bye on the final week of the season).
Farago’s heroics, late equalizer mitigate poor season-ending effort from FCE 25 Oct 2015After an 0-3-0 road trip that made the final game of the regular season about pride and not the playoffs, the Eddies responded to put together one of the worst 90-plus minutes that we’ve seen in franchise history. Make no mistake, if not for the heroics of keeper Tyson Farago, Jacksonville would have had a deserved three-goal lead before Roberts’s injury-time effort.
How April’s Cup defeat put the Ottawa Fury on course for NASL glory 22 Oct 2015What we saw was a Fury team that was reinvented. A phoenix had risen from the ashes of a heavy Cup defeat. The Fury went from a team that was routinely getting picked apart to the staunchest defensive side in NASL. And, ironically, that was most clear in the league games against the Eddies. The Eddies scored six times in two Cup games against the Fury; in three subsequent league games against Ottawa, no Edmonton shot entered the Fury’s goal.
Quintessentially Canadian Power Rankings, MLS Week 33/NASL Week 27 19 Oct 2015As we head into the final week of the MLS regular-season schedule and the last two weeks of the NASL regular-season slate, only four players remain mathematically alive to be the top Canadian in terms of minutes played in either division one or two.
Miller vows changes will be made after Eddies blow lead against 10-man Armada 17 Oct 2015Remember that the Eddies gave up a goal 12 seconds into the match in their NASL season-opening loss in Jacksonville. But Saturday’s game, with the Eddies badly needing a win to fan their fading playing hopes, might have surpassed that in infamy.
After Laing-less FCE loses to Carolina, Miller has harsh words for the Jamaica Football Federation 14 Oct 2015“I have to say I am fairly disappointed in the Jamaican federation. Here is a player [Laing] who they take all the way to Korea for a friendly, but they know he’s suspended for the next four [World Cup qualifying] matches. And they know this will have a huge impact on his club. They have not shown any respect to the club at all. The Canadian association asked if Mallan would be available for the most recent camp [Tuesday friendly with Ghana] and they were very understanding when I said we needed him because it’s an important time for the club. Of course, that was before Mallan got injured. But it shows the difference in class between the two federations. I’m not saying Lance Laing is such a great player that we can’t play without him; no player is that good. But, the Jamaican federation needs to respect the spirit of the game.”
Quintessentially Canadian Power Rankings, MLS Week 32/NASL Week 26 12 Oct 2015With NASL having a shorter schedule than MLS, this was basically a catch-up week for the second division, which gives us a better idea on how NASL teams rank against the MLS sides when it comes to giving first-team minutes to Canadian players. And, we see Toronto FC’s Jonathan Osorio fall out of top spot in the Canadian minutes-played ranks. Atlanta’s Kyle Porter retakes the lead.
Miller on Eddies’ loss to Cosmos: “If we’re going to defend like that, we’re going to get what we deserve” 11 Oct 2015The Eddies now trail the Tampa Bay Rowdies by one point for the fourth and final playoff spot in NASL. Both teams have three games left on their schedules. The Eddies are at Carolina Wednesday, then have a home-and-home with Jacksonville to end their season.
Eddies will be Laing-less for big weekend match against the Cosmos 7 Oct 2015In the previous five matches Laing has missed, the Eddies have earned just five out of a possible 15 points (1-2-2).
Quintessentially Canadian Power Rankings, MLS Week 31/NASL Week 25 5 Oct 2015As we get into the final weeks of the MLS and NASL seasons, the minutes-played-by-Canadians numbers continue to trend downward.
