DeRo’s hat trick allows 10-man D.C. United to escape with draw against TFC 7 Aug 2011 Dwayne De Rosario once again exacted sweet, sweet revenge against another former club — this time a hat trick against his hometown team, Toronto FC.
Jarju to miss Whitecaps’ match this weekend due to national-team commitment 5 Aug 2011 Jarju has been called up to the Gambian national squad and will begin preparations for a friendly on Wednesday against the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
DeRo is the hero of week no. 20 in MLS 1 Aug 2011 The former face of Toronto FC is the MLS Player of the Week. The North American Soccer Reporters voted Dwayne De Rosario as the top performer of week 20. The Scarborough native notched both goals — each of them a highlight-reel finish — as D.C. United went on the road and defeated the San Jose Earthquakes by a 2-0 score.
MLS shows Europe how to treat diving in the game 29 Jul 2011 MLS is doing the right thing. For years, soccer fans have heard major bodies from FIFA to UEFA to the major European leagues to promise that they will do something about diving. It has only been lip service.
De Rosario at centre of an NHL-style trade… in MLS 27 Jun 2011 Love him or hate him, Dwayne De Rosario is big news again. Less than three months after Toronto FC traded the attacking midfielder and former face of the franchise to the New York Red Bulls, he has been sent to D.C. United.
Lenhart earns MLS Player of the Week nod, despite Hassli 13 Jun 2011 Eric Hassli may have scored the most jaw-dropping goal since the dawn of time, but it wasn’t enough to earn him the nod as MLS Player of the Week. San Jose Earthquakes’ striker Steven Lenhart got the nod after the ballots from the members of the North American Soccer Reporters were counted. Hard to argue with the decision: Lenhart bagged a hat trick and set up the Quakes’ winning goal in a 4-2 win over D.C. United.
Canada out to avenge 2007 Gold Cup loss to the U.S. 6 Jun 2011 The time for talking is over — in just over 24 hours, Canada will look to upstage its rivals from the Unites States as both teams begin their Gold Cup campaigns in Detroit. Whenever the U.S. and Canada play each other it’s a big game, but when the neighbours take to the pitch on Tuesday night, the Red and White will also have revenge on its mind.
Donovan named May’s MLS Player of the Month 4 Jun 2011 Donovan got the nod by leading the ballots cast by the members of the North American Soccer Reporters. Donovan scored six goals in the month of May, as the Galaxy surged to the top of the Western Conference, albeit by playing a heck of a lot more league games than the recognized big dogs on the block, Real Salt Lake.
TFC’s rebuilding mantra has been proven wrong 30 May 2011 The significance of Toronto FC’s 6-2 home loss to the Philadelphia Union can’t be ignored. Through five coaches and three GMs/directors of soccer/technical directors, TFC fans have heard of long-term plans, rebuilding processes and the continuing pleas to fans for patience. Philadelphia was a raw expansion franchise last season. It has played a third of its schedule in year two of its existence, and it’s in first place in the East. You could make the argument that the Union is at a better point now than TFC has been any time in its history. When the Union faced TFC — on TFC's home turf — it was men vs. boys.
Catching up with Geoff Aunger, the first Canadian to win MLS Cup 24 May 2011 There is one honour that belongs to Geoff Aunger that no other Canadian soccer player can ever take from him. Aunger, the Red Deer, Alta. native who was capped 44 times by the national team, was the first Canadian to ever play on an MLS Cup winner, the D.C. United side of 1999 that some would argue is still the greatest team to ever play in the league. “Making it in that league at that time was very difficult,” said Aunger, who now works in New York as a private banker. “At the time, we, the Canadian players, counted as import players."
