A neat little Canadian drama unfolded in Saturday night’s game between Toronto FC and the Chicago Fire.

Toronto FC will be happy with an efficient 1-0 road win over the Ottawa Fury. The Montreal Impact, meanwhile, might not be so happy with its 1-0 home win over the Vancouver Whitecaps.

So, as consolation goals go, Alphonso Davies’s strike against D.C. United will go down as one of the greatest in MLS history.

It’s been another goal bonanza for Canadians this week in MLS and USL.

Many Canadians in the USL celebrated the week leading up to Canada Day by providing  fireworks of their own.

In hockey, it’s called a natural hat trick. That is, three goals are scored all in a row by one player. One. Two. Three. With no one else getting a goal in between.

So, it’s a good time to analyze the numbers: So far this season, 27 Canadians have played in MLS matches.

Well, that was a hell of a weekend for Canadians in MLS and USL.

Of course, the Fury, who have been playing Canadians in the 700-minutes-per-game range over the past few weeks, had the most movers and shakers. Four of the top 11 USL players in terms of minutes played by Canadians are Fury players. And they comprise six of the top 20.

You’ll notice that Noah Verhoeven — and his 594 minutes played so far this season for Fresno FC — has been added to the rankings. He’s been assimilated into the Canadian collective.
