Lee announced his impending retirement on Tuesday. Lee was the Whitecaps’ player of the year of 2012. He has a goal and 10 assists in 64 MLS games since he joined the Whitecaps before the 2012 season. The team will honour the right back before its match against the Colorado Rapids, the same team that eliminated the Whitecaps’ from the playoff race last weekend. “It will be the most memorable game in my life,” Lee said in a release issued by the Whitecaps. “I’m a happy guy. I learned so many things throughout my career, much more than I had expected when I was young. It is a great time to finish with a great team and great people. I deeply appreciate our fans, my teammates, and all of the staff in the club. I’m sure Vancouver Whitecaps FC will remain in my mind as my team forever.” Most memorable game in his life? That’s saying something. Lee appeared in three World Cups with South Korea, and has 127 caps, good for third all-time in his country’s history. He’s played in the Champions League. He’s won Dutch league titles. But the fact that the game has become a bit of a tribute to Lee at least gives it some meaning to Whitecaps fans, rather than simply making BC Place a destination to discuss whether or not coach Martin Rennie will be back in 2014.
