Should Evan Bush get the call to join the Impact in MLS?

There was a small silver lining in the black cloud that was the Montreal Impact’s weekend.

Goalkeeper Evan Bush was named the NASL’s defensive player of the week Tuesday, after his stellar performance allowed the Impact to, ahem, only lose to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers by a 1-0 scoreline Saturday.

The loss severely dented the Impact’s playoff hopes. With four games remaining, Montreal remains four points adrift of the NSC Minnesota Stars for the final playoff spot in the league.

Bush, who played with Div.-2 side Crystal Palace Baltimore last year, made seven saves in a game in which the Impact was outplayed by the Strikers. Bush has been a revelation this season. Signed to be a back-up to veteran Bill Gaudette, he has been excellent since Gaudette was injured. He’s registered six shutouts this season.

“I am very happy for him,” said sporting director and coach Nick De Santis in a statement. “Since he became our starting goalkeeper, Evan has excelled and been very consistent.”

In fact, Bush has been better than Gaudette. And that creates an interesting scenario for next season. Gaudette was brought over from the Puerto Rico Islanders, and the thinking was that he’d get the chance to make his return to MLS when the Impact makes the move in 2012. But incoming coach Jesse Marsch has seen Bush turn in stellar performance after stellar performance.

So, does Bush get the call instead of Gaudette? Or do they both go up with the team?

You could always sign both, as well as steal away a keeper from either LA (Josh Saunders) or DC (Steve Cronin)
