The Canadian midfielder, who rejected an offer from Sporting Kansas City in the spring of 2012, had been out of work, trying his luck in both Hungary and England, looking to latch on with a side. And, finally, there is news that English side Fleetwood Town FC has inked Gyorio. Sources close to Gyorio have told The 11 that the midfielder is simply waiting on his paperwork from the Canadian Soccer Association so he’s eligibile to play for Fleetwood, which plays in nPower League 2, or the fourth tier of English football. Gyorio was with FC Tampa Bay (now the Rowdies) during the 2011 NASL season, where he established himself as one of the best wide players in the league — and also was known for some spectacular free kicks. Gyorio’s play in Tampa earned the attention of SKC manager Peter Vermes — and the fact that both Gyorio and he share Hungarian heritage helped him earn a trial with the MLS side. Fleetwood’s site confirmed that SKC offered a four-year deal, but Gyorio’s camp rejected it. The money simply wasn’t good enough and off he went to Europe. In 2012, Gyorio was a surprise cut from the Canadian U-23 squad that went to Olympic qualifying in Nashville, Tenn. Coach Tony Fonseca chose to go with a very young squad and several of the near-23 players, like Gyorio and FC Edmonton’s Kyle Porter, paid the price. Gyorio was born in a Hungarian speaking part of the former Yugoslavia (now Serbia) and has a Hungarian passport, which makes it easier for him to find work in Europe. Gyorio grew up in Prince Edward Island.
