In Saturday’s win in Jacksonville’s 40-plus C heat (with the humidity), the Ottawa Fury gave 464 of a possible 990 minutes playing time to Canadians. Canadian Carl Haworth scored the second goal of the game in a 2-0 win. And, with that, Ottawa not only leads all NASL and MLS teams in terms of giving minutes to Canadians, the Fury can boast that an average of over 300 minutes per game goes to players from this country.

That achievement highlights our rankings of the minutes played by Canadians in North America’s major pro leagues.

Other achievements of note:

Tosaint Ricketts made his first MLS appearance, coming in as a sub in Toronto FC’s 4-1 win over D.C. United.
And, David Edgar made his first appearance as a Vancouver Whitecaps in last week’s midweek friendly against Crystal Palace. But, on Sunday, we was with the USL’s WFC2 squad, where he played 90 minutes.

    Yes very impressive and probably a lot of work. Thanks again.
    By the way have you ever thought of Veteran vs Youth? I’d be interested in knowing how many minutes go to U23 players vs older ones.

    It is great for Toronto and Montreal that veteran players choose them. Players like Johnson & Bernier come to mind. I’m glad to see Vancouver finally get some CMNT players who were interested in playing there.

    It’s weird because of the 3 cities Vancouver is the nicest by far IMHO (blatant BC bias from a person raised in BC, go figure 🙂 ). They can attract talent from Asia, Europe and South/Central America but not from Canadians. They’ve tried but until Edgar and MDJ had nothing to show for their efforts. Even a BC boy like Rob Friend turned down more money to play in Vancouver to stay in Germany, then when he did go to MLS he signed for LA. Just too weird.

      I fully agree that Vancouver is a wonderful, wonderful city. I love visiting the city. But, remember that most Canadians playing soccer are making middle-class salaries, and that makes Vancouver a very expensive proposition. Really, the cost barrier for a soccer player is the same as it is for many people who consider moving to Vancouver. A soccer player’s money-making window is short; he needs to come up with cash to provide for him and his family not only in the present, but after he retires and may need to go back to school or be on the quest for a new career. Living in Vancouver doesn’t allow one to save a lot of money for the future.

      Basically, it’s a cost-of-living argument.
