Lam isn’t welcome back to train or play with FC Edmonton

Matt Lam won’t be back with FC Edmonton this season — and likely won’t be back next year.

The club confirmed that Lam, who was suspended by the club at the end of August, will not be back with the team in 2012. The club holds an option on the local midfielder’s contract for the 2013 season, but it would be hard to imagine that it would be exercised.

At the end of August, the team confirmed that Lam would be suspended for the Labour Day weekend home match — which the Eddies lost 2-0 to Atlanta — for “disciplinary reasons.” But, after that one-game internal suspension was imposed, Lam hasn’t been back with the team at first- or reserve-team training, and he hasn’t been involved in any games.

The club confirmed it is paying Lam’s salary to the end of the season, but he isn’t welcome to train or play with the team.

While the club won’t confirm the nature of the incident, it is clear that the communication between Lam and the coaching staff is irreparably broken. That’s ironic, because Hans Schrijver, FCE’s assistant coach, had Lam under his wing in 2010 — when the midfielder was the Eddies’ top player in their season of friendlies — and in 2011, when he was assistant at Japanaese side JEF United. Lam spent the 2011 campaign on loan in Japan.

When Lam returned to the Eddies in 2012, he was expected to be one of the team’s dominant players, but he saw his playing time and effectiveness wane as the season progressed. He wasn’t even named to the team’s roster for the road trip that came right before his suspension.

When Lam came back to Canada, he was expected to get surgery on his shoulder, but decided instead to play with a brace rather than miss time.

The coaching staff has been extended through the 2013 season, which may make it impossible for Lam to return.

Matt Lam is the only player this club has been able to send on loan to a bigger league and now he’s gone. Developed at Ajax academy and now he’s gone. Clearly coaching is the problem.

First half of the season, sinkgraven played the team and system Dwight put together. As soon as he put his own spin on it, they went on an 8-game losing streak and went on to an impressive 5-0 blowout in the first playoff game. Then, he cut half the team and started with a much more impressive roster, only to completely misuse all of his most talented players all the while seeing his two best benched for “disciplinary” reasons (two players who just happen to be hometown heroes in most minds). If that’s not seen as incompetent coaching staff, then i don’t know what it is.

Just checked again… team says that, with the reserve season being done, Michal is working privately with goalkeeping coach Tomasz Janas.

And, on Wednesday (Sept. 19) Misiewicz trained with FCE. Saw it with my own eyes…!

Remember when there was excitement over FCE being an incubator for Canadian talent as oppose to the three MLS clubs? What fools we were. FCE is a zoo. The coaching staff are nitwits and only hold young players back with their incompetence. They are bleeding money as a club. How long will ownership bankroll a money loser that draws peanuts?

Oh, and the idea they would sell players to Europe to make money was a joke. They haven’t sold one player! These North American players are worthless to a European club unless they are on a free transfer or have proved themselves in D1 MLS and not against the low level garbage in the NASL. Euro clubs are not stupid. They are not buying from poverty row when they can get it for free.

And during the year FCE finally realized it could not just compete in D2 with a mostly young underpaid Canadian team and brought in more mediocre foreign players. And they still stunk. I guess the development revolution is over!

Free Saiko and Porter to MLS! Their careers are just wasted on the terrible FCE and in the NASL.

Wow. NASL is garbage? It’s just a lower level league than MLS. Maybe you should suit up for FCE and score some goals.

Sherri, there is also Canadian keeper Misiewicz, who had been removed from the team.

Just double-checked with FC Edmonton… Misiewicz is still on the roster.

I would equate this to FCE ownership choosing incompetent coaching staff over 1 of Edmonton’s most promising players. Wait, didn’t Saiko get disciplined too? I stand corrected. It’s FCE ownership choosing incompetent coaching staff over 2 of Edmonton’s most promising players. To be honest, as an FCE supporter but more importantly a supporter of young Edmonton soccer talent, I think this might be the best thing for Lam. Hope Saiko gets to leave at the end of this season too instead of being held back and hindered by the most unsuccessful coaching staff in the NASL.

Well Sherri we had the same coaching staff last year as far as I know, and had a great first half, including a playoff game. Incompetent is pretty harsh judgement. Maybe you should coach and we’ll finish first!

Hmm… A good start last year? Sure, i’ll give them that… Sinkgraven however then led his team to an impressive 8 game losing streak, only barely making the playoffs…Only to get killed 5-0 in the first game to a team they had beaten earlier that year… He then cut half the team and started with a new roster… This time leading his team to an 8th place finish, all the while managing to alienate 3 of their best Canadian talents, 2 of them who happen to be Edmontonians. Yep, I think I’ll stick with my original qualifier – Incompetent.

It is hard to believe that the coaching staff can decide the fate of many players and in the case of FCE that kind of things look very common and normal. That is not good for many young Canadian players that need an opportunity to develop.
