Inescapably Canadian Power Rankings: MLS Week 1

Six years ago, the Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps clashed on MLS First Kick weekend. The script was that this was an “all-Canadian” matchup. On that day, the Whitecaps started zero Canadians. The Impact started one… Patrice Bernier.

The two teams met for the First Kick opener at BC Place this past weekend, and what a change. The teams combined to put a total of seven Canadians on the field. There was a goal and an assist from teenager Alphonso Davies.

So, as we begin yet another season of tracking the minutes played by Canadians in North America’s pro leagues, Davies’s first-ever MLS goal highlighted a day which saw the Whitecaps and Impact combine to give 523 combined minutes to Canadians.

As well, we shouldn’t forget that LAFC played its first-ever MLS regular-season match, and won in Seattle. Mark-Anthony Kaye started and got an assist on LAFC’s first-ever goal, and defender Dejan Jakovic played the full 90.

Here are the rankings after the first week of MLS play:

Just because we all love more statistics here’s the Audi index for the dirty dozen

    Davies +1006, de Jong +486, Teibert +130
    Piette +206, Choiniere +20, Petrasso -135, Edwards -202
    Osorio +486
    Laryea +195, Johnson -195

Don’t hold back Ralph, tell us how you really feel 🙂
I’m assuming you are a Whitecap fan.

It was a very poor outing for the 3 Montreal players. They had better pick it up a few notches or they will be riding the pine and forget about international play. Aside from the Whitecaps loss to D2 Ottawa a few years back in the Canadian Championship I don’t recall seeing such mediocrity out of Canadian players. Hopefully last Sunday was just a bad day for those 3 and they get their act together. If they don’t they won’t be long for first team duty. I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least 2 benched for the next game.

“saw the Whitecaps and Impact combine to give 523 combined minutes to Canadians”

Please stop using the word “give” or “given”. It is patronising and demeaning to the players. This is pro sport at the top level for Canada/USA. Minutes are not given, they are taken. Taken by the players who are most likely to help the coach keep his job. They do that by being better than any of the alternatives.

I can see Vancouver’s Canadians taking more minutes but Montreal’s are on this ice. Poor performances by all.

Teibert 63/68 passing!!!! If anyone can find the Opta visuals let us know. I don’t see it on MLS web site

Vancouver’s Canadians are vastly superior to Montreal’s Canadians 🙂
Davies owned Petrasso, Teibert completed way more passes than Piette, deJong was solid and Edwards was invisible.

So when does everyone start the “TFC hate Canada” speeches? Or are those only reserved for Vancouver?
