Impact sends Mallace, Ubiparipovic to Minnesota

The Montreal Impact have loaned midfielders Sinisa Ubiparipovic and Calum Mallace to Minnesota United FC.

For Ubiparipovic, who has only played five MLS minutes, the move will mark a return to NASL; he was with Montreal in 2011, the team’s final season in the second division. He was named the team’s newcomer of the year in ’11 and made the move to MLS with the club.

Mallace has played just 36 minutes this season and needs the minutes.

MUFC has been the most disappointing team in NASL. It finished second from bottom in the spring-season standings, even though they were the pundits’ pick for the title. Now, the goal is to resurrect the club in the fall season.

The team has big earners — by NASL standards — in ex-Impact and FC Edmonton midfielder Bryan Arguez and the striker combination of Etienne Barbara and Pablo Campos. In 2011, Campos and Barbara combined for 32 goals with the Carolina RailHawks. But MUFC in 2013 is a lot like the Impact were back in 2011; expected to walk away with the NASL, but instead finishing near the back of the pack.

In 2011, the Impact were boosted by the additions of MLS loans; Miguel Montano came from Seattle and Ryan Pore came from Portland.

MUFC plays July friendlies at home to FC Edmonton Wednesday evening and again on Saturday. The fall season begins in the first weekend of August.

Would they have fit into the budget Steve? Considering they went to our rival I’m going to say yes. IMO If incoming players can vastly improve the club, make some room. That’s professional sports maybe.

With all the talk about bringing in players how come Edmonton wasn’t the destination for these two instead of Minnesota? Hopefully it’s a consideration that Edmonton gets dibs with players from all the Canadian MLS teams and not just Vancouver. I’d think that would be a positive loading up with better players.

FCE is only looking at strikers and attacking midfielders right now. Ubi could have been done, but would he have fit into Edmonton’s budget? But Mallace would have been a non-starter.
