FC Edmonton: Porter won’t be with the team in 2013

Kyle Porter is on trial with D.C. United. But, if that doesn’t pan out, the Canadian forward no longer has an FC Edmonton contract offer as a fallback position.

The team confirmed Monday that it’s offer to Porter has expired — and has been withdrawn. That means Porter, who scored 12 times over the last two NASL seasons, won’t be back with the club in 2013. The club can now use the money it had offered to Porter and allocate that towards trying to find more forward options.

“We wish Kyle well with his career,” the team said in a statement.

Porter was offered a contract by the Eddies, but did not sign. Coach Colin Miller revealed that the team had given Porter a deadline to sign the deal, or else it would move on without him.

Porter recently earned his first two national-team caps under Miller, who was Canada’s interim coach for last week’s friendlies against the United States and Denmark. But Miller was critical in his assessment of Porter, stating that the forward needed to show more “desire and passion” in order to make a jump to being an international regular.

Over the weekend, Porter assisted on D.C. United’s goal in a 1-1 exhibition-match draw with Malmo.
