TFC’s “major announcement” expected to be coaching change

Toronto FC has just announced that President Kevin Payne will be making a “major announcement” Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. ET.

It’s expected that the Reds will announce yet another new head coach. Former New Zealand national teamer Ryan Nelsen is expected to be named as the eighth head coach in TFC history.

Nelsen had been with Queens Park Rangers as a defender, but manager Harry Redknapp told ESPN over the weekend that he expected his veteran player to leave the club to take a coaching job in MLS. And Redknap told ESPN there “was truth to the rumour” that Nelsen would be going to an MLS club.

Nelsen was captain of D.C. United when it won MLS Cup in 2004, and was twice named to the league’s best XI before heading to the Premiership. He made over 170 appearances for Blackburn Rovers, then spent five games with Tottenham before moving to QPR in 2012.

Of course, Nelsen’s years with D.C. United put him in the good books with then-DCU president Kevin Payne, who took over the TFC president’s role late in 2012. With the Nelsen hiring, Payne is putting his stamp on the club.

That would mean that Paul Mariner’s future with TFC is unclear at the moment — though it would be hard to see him coexisting in any new coaching arrangement.
