U-23 keeper Misiewicz in FC Edmonton camp

Michal Misiewicz

FC Edmonton could carry four goalkeepers in the 2012 season.

In camp this week is former Canadian U-17 and U-20 keeper Michal Misiewicz, who most recently played club football in Poland with Polonia Bytom. He also spent time with Sunderland’s U-18s. He’s currently part of Canada’s U-23 player pool.

Baart won’t be coming back to FC Edmonton

Rein Baart

It looks as if Lance Parker and David Monsalve will battle for the role of FC Edmonton’s No. 1 keeper in 2012.

The NASL club confirmed Tuesday that Rein Baart, who got the lion’s share of the starts in 2011, won’t be back. Baart rejected an offer to be a player-coach for the club in 2012.

Baart, a Dutch veteran brought in to stabilize the goalkeeping position, struggled at the start of the 2011 campaign, collecting a couple of red cards and allowing more than a fair share of soft goals. Because of the suspensions and inconsistencies in his play, Parker — a former Chivas USA keeper — got some time and actually won a Defensive Player of the Week award. But, as Parker pushed Baart for the starting job, the American keeper suffered a compound fracture of his right arm that ended his season.

FC Edmonton outgunned, outclassed in playoff shocker

Rein Baart

Outplayed. Outgunned. Outhustled.

Think of anything to follow the prefix “out” and it would describe FC Edmonton’s maiden playoff performance.

The Eddies were routed 5-0 by the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in their NASL quarterfinal, as FC Edmonton’s season came crashing down around its ears.

It was men vs. boys in south Florida, and the Eddies picked the worst possible time to play its worst game of the season.

“I don’t know what it is,” said FCE coach Harry Sinkgraven. “We had our normal preparations before the game. We looked confident going into the game. But we made a lot of mistakes in the back… We did not play composed. When we had the ball in the back, we tried to play the ball up the field too quickly.”

Poor finishing likely costs FC Edmonton home-field advantage

John Jonke's goal wasn't enough for FCE.

FC Edmonton spurned numerous scoring chances — and paid for it.

In a game the Eddies needed to win to improve their chances of home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs, they surrendered a 1-0 lead and lost 2-1 to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the regular season finale at Foote Field.

Edmonton now trails the Strikers by a point in the battle for fourth and home-field advantage in the playoffs. But the Strikers have a game in hand, which sees them face the last-place Atlanta Silverbacks next weekend. If they win that, FC Edmonton can’t catch them.

The Eddies have one game left, a road date against Montreal.

Craig’s last-gasp goal puts FC Edmonton in playoffs

Paul Craig

A last-gasp header from substitute Paul Craig has guaranteed FC Edmonton a trip to the NASL playoffs.

Craig scored at the death, heading home a corner from Shaun Saiko to give the Eddies a 2-1 win over the last-place Atlanta Silverbacks, who were reduced to 10 men at the half-hour mark.

Combined with Montreal’s 1-1 draw at Puerto Rico — thanks to another last-gasp goal, this time a penalty from Islander Jonathan Fana — FCE’s win guarantees that the Impact can no longer catch the Eddies.

“It was a great corner by Shaun,” said Craig. “We decided to take it quickly. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time.”

Second-half rally gives FC Edmonton massive win over Minnesota

Shaun Saiko

A rousing second-half comeback and an astonishing miss from NSC Minnesota forward Amani Walker has propelled FC Edmonton within touching distance of the NASL playoffs.

FC Edmonton beat the Stars 3-1 at Foote Field Saturday, putting the Eddies only one point behind FC Tampa Bay for third place in the standings and, more importantly, eight points ahead of the Montreal Impact for a playoff spot.

After a sluggish first half which saw the Eddies fortunate to only be trailing the visitors by a single goal, FCE scored three unanswered goals in the second half. The winner came from Shaun Saiko, who latched onto a long clearance from keeper Rein Baart that bounced behind Minnesota defender Cristiano Dias.

Shorthanded Islanders get draw with FC Edmonton

Michael Cox

The Puerto Rico Islanders lost five of their seven Puerto Rican national team players for Tuesday night’s date with FC Edmonton in Bayamon. But it was a Dominican Republic international who did the damage.

Jonathan Fana capitalized on a defensive error from FCE centre back John Jonke, allowing the Islanders to come out of the match with a 1-1 draw.

With the draw, Edmonton moves into sole possession of fourth place in the NASL standings; NSC Minnesota is a point behind, Fort Lauderdale is two points behind. The Montreal Impact, out of the playoffs at the moment, is five behind FC Edmonton. Each of the three chasing teams has a game in hand on the Eddies.

FC Edmonton loses heartbreaker while Impact keeps charging

Kyle Porter

FC Edmonton gave up a heartbreaking injury-time goal in 3-2 loss in Puerto Rico, while the Montreal Impact cruised to a 2-0 victory in Minnesota.

The result? The Impact is still in seventh place in the NASL standings, but has closed the gap between itself between fourth-place FCE and itself to just four points. It trails fifth-place NSC Minnesota by four, and the sixth-place Fort Lauderdale strikers — holders of the final playoff spot — by just three.

All of the teams have five games left in their seasons.

So much for the Impact being out of the race.

“Montreal seems to do this every season,” said FC Edmonton forward Kyle Porter of the Impact’s late-season hot streak. “But we can’t worry about Montreal. We have to worry about ourselves.”

Defensive mixup costs FC Edmonton two precious points

Paul Hamilton

The good news? FC Edmonton’s five-game losing streak is over. The bad news? The Eddies gave up a sloppy late goal and threw two points away, being forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers Sunday at Foote Field.

With Montreal beating Atlanta Sunday, the Eddies’ lead over the Impact now sits at a precarious seven points.

“I’m kinda at a loss for words right now,” said central defender Paul Hamilton, who scored off a corner in the first half. “We were playing really well. We had a lot of opportunities, even after they scored.”

Pitchkolan’s goal extends FC Edmonton’s losing streak to five

Aaron Pitchkolan

FC Edmonton’s losing streak has grown to five games, as Aaron Pitchkolan’s last-gasp wonder strike gave the Puerto Rico Islanders a 1-0 win at a rain-soaked Foote Field Saturday.

After FC Edmonton defender Paul Hamilton cleared the ball out of the penalty area, it pinged around in a sea of blue and orange shirts. Pitchkolan simply turned on the ball and hammered it into the top left corner of the goal from 20 yards out.

“It’s pretty disheartening,” said Hamilton. “I think we played a lot better as a team today. We are on a streak right now where nothing is going our way.”
