Once-Toronto FC defender Nana Attakora would be an interesting pickup for Jesse Marsch.
The Montreal Impact will be able to choose from several Canadian players in Wednesday’s MLS Expansion Draft.

Three Canadian players were left unprotected by Toronto FC ahead of Wednesday’s expansion draft, including Designated Player Julian de Guzman. Adrian Cann, recovering from a knee injury that forced him to miss most of the season, is also on the unprotected list. Cann left training camp in 2010 in a contract dispute, then later returned and apologized to the club and the fans.

Gianluca Zavarise rounds out the Canadians on TFC’s unprotected list.

Interestingly, the Reds chose to protect Canadian midfielder Terry Dunfield, who stated a few weeks back (CLICK HERE) that he wasn’t sure if he’d be back with TFC in 2012.

Canadian national teamer Nana Attakora was also left on the list for Montreal; if Attakora could return to the form of 2010, he could be a valuable and inexpensive pick-up for the Impact. Of the players the Impact have signed so far, none would fill any of the three required domestic slots as required by MLS rules.

Ottawa’s Edson Edward, a reserve player with FC Dallas, is also available.

Vancouver’s list of available players contained few surprises, including the appearance of Designated Player Mustapha Jarju, who didn’t score in an ineffective and disappointing half-season in MLS. Jarju was a star in second-division Belgian soccer, but struggled to make the jump to the more competitive MLS ranks.

And, both Jay Nolly and Joe Cannon were left unprotected by the Whitecaps — a clear signal from the team that it has accepted that goalkeeping is a major issue going forward. Don’t expect either to go, as the Impact is committed to Evan Bush, who was the NASL’s top keeper in 2011.

Portland left Ryan Pore unprotected. Pore, who was the top player in Div.-2 soccer in 2010, made the move to MLS wit the Timbers. The Timbers then loaned him to Montreal, where he became a major part of the Impact’s desperate push for a playoff spot (that came up just short) in its final NASL campaign. According to the Oregonian, Montreal and Portland made a deal that ensured the Impact would take no Timbers players that finished the 2011 season with the big club in exchange for the Pore loan and an international allocation spot. Since Pore didn’t finish the season with Portland, you have to think he is still in play. (And a deal that enraged other NASL teams).

Montreal coach Jesse Marsch will pick 10 players Wednesday afternoon. He cannot choose more than one player per club.
