Floro doesn’t change much ahead of Canada’s friendly with Australia

Canadian national-team coach Benito Floro has revealed his 21-man roster for the Oct. 15 friendly against Australia in London, England.

Of the 21 players named, all featured in Canada’s recent two-game series against Mauritania in Spain, which saw the Canadians get a draw and a loss — and fail to score a goal.

The two new additions were already announced, but they aren’t officially considered Canadian roster players. On Monday, Queens Park Rangers confirmed that Dylan Carreiro and Michael Petrasso, who are with QPR’s developmental program, have been named to the squad. The Canadian Soccer Association confirmed that the Petrasso and Carreiro have been invited to camp, but their spots are outside the 21-man roster. So, 23 players will be in camp, 21 on the Canada roster. Easy, right?

“This camp and match against Australia will be important as we continue to work on establishing our team’s tactical structure,” said Floro in a release.

“With each camp we need to continue to build towards specific goals and maintain a certain quality of play. Australia is a strong opponent and will test our latest key learnings.”

Maybe I was a bit soon in judging Floro and this selection. I forgot there was a U17-camp at the same time, which is way more interesting than the friendly against Australia.

The way I see it now is Floro gives everybody a second chance to make a case for themselves, but if the youngsters perform well (and why shouldn’t they?) those veterans had better watch out. I really hope the U17 shines and puts some pressure on the older lads from the MNT. Floro needs more options desperately.

Why change a winning team, huh? Extremely disappointed with this selection of veterans who’ve already proven not to be the kind of quality players needed to qualify for a World Cup berth.
