CMISL to take one-year hiatus: Plans to return for 2013-14

The Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League will not have a 2012-13 season. But league president Mel Kowalchuk is hopeful the circuit will return for 2013-14.

Kowalchuk said he was working on bringing new teams into the indoor soccer league, when he ran into health problems. While he is now almost back to 100 per cent, his health issue forced him to put the league on the back burner.

“We are looking at coming back next season,” he said. “But nothing is going to happen this year. It’s far too late to put anything together.”

Last year, the league was reduced to just two teams, Calgary United FC and the Edmonton Drillers, after the Winnipeg Alliance informed Kowalchuk it would not field a team for the season.

So, with just two teams, the CMISL “season” was reduced to a one-game showdown between Edmonton and Calgary, which the Drillers won by a 6-3 count. By being Canada’s recognized indoor soccer champion, the Drillers earned the right to go to the FIFRA World Club Championship to be held in Quito, Ecuador starting Feb. 26.

But, considering that both Calgary (the 2011 CMISL champ) and Edmonton (the 2011 runner-up) turned down invites to last year’s FIFRA tourney in Mexico, it doesn’t seem likely that either side would have the budget or willpower to make an even longer trip to Ecuador.

Last season, a squad from the University of Sherbrooke represented Canada at the tourney, which was won by the PASL’s powerhouse squad, the San Diego Sockers.

If #FCEd has players contracted even in the winter season. Might as well field a team in the #CMISL. Win the league and play in the worldcup

Saw this on Twitter and thought it was a pretty good idea to increase the profile of the club
