Etienne Barbara has been named the NASL player of the month. The physical Maltese forward from the Carolina RailHawks is tied for the league scoring lead with four markers, and has victimized both Canadian NASL teams in the first month of the season.
Barbara scored the opener in a 2-1 win over Montreal and the first goal in a 2-0 win over FC Edmonton.

“It’s a great honour for Etienne and everyone with the team,” said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie in a release. “He’ll be the first player in the NASL to get that award, so it’s great for him. It’s well deserved. Four goals in four games is quite a feat at any level of soccer, and he’s playing at a very high level. I hope he can continue to do that.”

Barbara has represented and scored for Malta at the international level.

How The 11 voted: Barbara. The one thing that strikes you about him is how he’s not just a physical force on the ball, but how he uses the space that he creates for himself to spring some of his teammates free. For a big centre forward, he distributes the ball awfully well. He’s not young; he turns 29 this year. But, maybe this is a player who still has enough in the tank and could move up and help an MLS side in the future. If Montreal keeps its philosophy moving from NASL into MLS — having big, physical strikers up top to win battles and fight for chances in the box — a player like Barbara could be a useful recruit.
