Six Canadians to try their luck at NASL combine

Kenny Caceros: Ottawa native makes push for NASL job

Six Canada-eligible players will head to Fort Lauderdale this weekend, trying to land jobs with FC Edmonton or one of the other seven NASL teams.

The NASL released its roster for its combine, which goes from Friday to Sunday. And it includes a significant number of Canadian players looking for contracts, as well as a substantial cadre of Capital City FC alumni.

Former Canadian U-20 player Anthony Di Biase, who had a January trial with FC Edmonton, will be at the combine. Di Biase, who as a teen spent some time with the youth wing of Belgian side Olympic Charleroi, was with the Hamilton Rage of the PDL in 2011.

Ottawa native Kenny Caceros, one of the stars of the Capital City FC team that got to the Canadian Soccer League final in 2011, will be at the combine. Caceros played 64 times for Syracuse University.

Rongen wants TFC Academy to be an MLS leader

Thomas Rongen

After his hiring was announced almost as an afterthought at a Toronto FC press conference in early January, new Academy Director Thomas Rongen’s first appearance went under the radar at the club’s recent media day as well.

The Academy side was placed in a separate area. Rongen stood in near anonymity beside academy coaches Danny Dichio and Jim Brennan.

Rongen is not an unknown in league circles being a former coach of four different clubs. The position, however, is somewhat new for him, but he’s had plenty of experience dealing with young players as the head coach of US U-20 men’s national team, leading the team to World Cups in 2007 and 2009.

“Yes…not necessarily as an academy director but head coach of respective organizations where we always talked about youth development,” said Rongen when asked he has had a similar role in the past. “I was clearly a big proponent of D.C. United to start that. I did start that in my first year actually. It’s grown to players like Andy Najar and Bill Hamid becoming part of the first team.

Camilo scores 35 seconds after kickoff, but Sounders draw Whitecaps

Camilo

Still celebrating his renegotiated contract with the Whitecaps, Camilo scored Vancouver’s first goal of the preseason just 35 seconds into the new campaign.

Alas, the Whitecaps couldn’t score again for the next 120 minutes, and settled for a draw in an extended game with the Seattle Sounders in Arizona.

Camilo scored almost immediately after the opening kickoff, set up by Atiba Harris. Harris has been almost a forgotten factor with the Whitecaps, even though he’s re-signed for the 2012 season. He enjoyed a great start to the 2011 season, with two goals and three assists through his first five starts but was sidelined by knee trouble. Now, with Camilo, Designated Player Eric Hassli and Sebastien Le Toux as part of the attack, Harris is rarely mentioned.
