Whitecaps made first Le Toux offer halfway through 2011 season

Sebastien Le Toux

The seeds of the deal that brought Sebastien Le Toux to the Vancouver Whitecaps were sown halfway through the 2011 season.

Looking for more help up top, the Whitecaps contacted the Philadelphia Union, asking if the team would be willing to part with its prize striker. The offer was rebuffed.

But, when the time came for Philadelphia to talk deal, the Union knew the Whitecaps would still be interested.

“By expressing interest… we were one of the first calls that they made,” said Whitecaps’ President Bob Lenarduzzi during a conference call Tuesday.

Ex-Whitecaps looking forward to meeting their old team in Voyageurs’ Cup

Alex Semenets, wearing a Whitecaps' jersey

If you would have asked him a day ago, French striker Sebastien Le Toux wouldn’t have imagined he’d be a topic of conversation in Edmonton, let alone Vancouver.

But the Whitecaps’ stunning move for the French forward was a topic of conversation at FC Edmonton practice on Tuesday morning. There’s no doubt that FC Edmonton — with Whitecaps products Kyle Porter, Antonio Rago, Alex Semenets and Paul Hamilton on the roster — is looking at its May 2 Amway Canadian Championshipn semifinal home leg as the biggest match in the franchise’s young existence.

The Whitecaps go to Commonwealth Stadium May 2 and FCE goes to B.C. Place May 9.

“I am already excited,” said FCE forward Kyle Porter, who left the Whitecaps before the start of last season. “It’s going to be the biggest game of my career. I think there will be a great turnout in Vancouver, hopefully 5,000 to 7,000 people here. I think we are going to have a great rivalry.”

The 11 has learned that the OSA will ask all leagues under its jurisdiction to block out June 12 (date for Canada vs. Honduras), Sept. 7 (Canada vs. Panama) and Oct. 12 (Canada vs. Cuba). The OSA has made it clear that it wants all focus to be on the Canadian men’s national team and national-team matches to be played at BMO Field. It is not a confirmation of the national-team matches, but a very strong indication.

When contacted Tuesday morning, Canadian Soccer Association officials reiterated that no dates have been confirmed.

The dates for 2012 are expected to be revealed on Feb. 2.

The CSA has has stated that it has given Coach Stephen Hart the option to select where he wants the team to play, so that it would have the best home-field advantage. And, the feeling is that Hart would want as many direct flights as possible for his players and a grass field to play on.
