Nyassi scores for Impact in draw with Atlas

The Montreal Impact got a goal from Sanna Nyassi, and wrapped up the team’s pre-season tour of Mexico with a 1-1 draw against Club Atlas.

The Impact finished with a win, a draw and a loss to the Mexican sides — which included Chivas Guadalajara and Estudiantes Tecos, who take up the bottom two spots in the current Mexican League table. Also in there was a 7-0 win over Iteso University.

Nyassi, who had the honour of replacing the injured Conor Casey in the Colorado Rapids’ front line after the elite striker went down with injury, converted a set-up from ageless veteran Eduardo Sebrango, who is looking to crack the MLS roster after coming out of retirement to play in NASL in 2011.

12 Canadians head to Florida, hoping for USL deals

Brad Rose... Torontonian and Yale grad is taking a shot at USL

A dozen Canadian prospects are among the 102 prospects working out at the United Soccer Leagues’ combine, which kicked off Thursday in Bradenton, Fla.

The combine brings together undrafted free agents who are looking to stick in the U.S. third division. The NASL combine goes in Florida in mid-February, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see some of these Canadian names surface there. It’s expected that eight or nine Canadians will take part in the NASL combine.

Scouts from MLS are also on hand at the USL camp.

On Thursday, goalkeepers will be put through the paces — and that list includes Dalhousie University’s Ben Ur and Ottawa Fury product Brandon Heembrook. Heembrook is one of 57 players at the camp who has experience playing in the PDL.

Canadian women studying up on Mexico’s tactical changes

John Herdman PHOTO: CANADA SOCCER/BOB FRID

The members of the Canadian women’s team have been opening their laptops and going over footage of Mexico’s performances at the CONCACAF Olympic qualifiers.

Mexico came into the tournament with a group of new players and a fresh tactical set-up, so some of the scouting the Canadian had from Mexico’s appearances at the Pan Am Games and the Women’s World Cup has gone out the window.

Canada faces Mexico in the CONCACAF semifinal Friday at B.C. Place. Both finalists go to the Olympic games, so the semifinals are actually the most important matches of the tournament. Canada coach John Herdman has nursed the team through an undefeated opening round, rotating the squad to ensure the players are fresh. And Canada, knowing the United States was always likely to win the other round-robin group, has been gearing for Mexico since before this tourney started.

“We have given the players the opportunity to be the best they can be on this one given night,” said Herdman.

Attakora leaves FC Union Berlin camp without a deal

Nana Attakora, in the TFC days

Nana Attakora’s attempt to land a job in Germany wasn’t successful.

Second-division side FC Union Berlin announced Wednesday that the Canadian defender’s trial had ended and that Attakora would not stay with the team.

Attakora played a half in a 3-0 loss to Spanish lower-division side Cadiz CF, then played the full 90 in a 4-2 loss to Cadiz’s third-division neighbour, San Fernando CD. The German side was in Spain, prepping for the second half of the season. The German leagues are currently on their winter break.

Edmonton Drillers on indoor world championship schedule, but they won’t be going

FIFRA says that the Edmonton Drillers will represent Canada at the new world indoor club soccer championships. The Drillers say no way.

The Drillers, who finished second to Calgary United FC in the Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League, are listed as Canada’s representative in the upcoming club championships, which will take place February 2-5 in Mexico (SEE HERE). FIFRA, which is the governing body for indoor soccer (not futsal — we are talking about the game that has boards) is inviting the national indoor soccer champions from Canada, the United States, Mexico and Ecuador to face each other. The American invitee is the PASL champion San Diego Sockers, which feature former FC Edmonton striker Daniel Antoniuk.

Originally, Calgary, as the recognized Canadian champion, was invited. But CMISL president Mel Kowalchuk confirmed earlier this year that the team would not go; the bubble around the team’s home field had collapsed.

The Drillers confirmed that not only that they won’t be going, but that the FIFRA mention of the team was the first the club had heard of the tourney.
